Amy Lame backtracks on putting “lesbian” as religion on the census? Tweet deleted!

6 03 2011

Regular readers of my blog will see that on Friday, I wrote about the folly of putting “Lesbian” as your religion on the upcoming UK census.  You can read that post HERE.

As I mentioned in my original blog post, this was encouraged by Amy Lame, posting on her Twitter feed on 25 February:

“writing #lesbian as my religion in next month’s #ukcensus bcse no section for sexual orientation…how else r we meant 2 count the queers?”

Since then, Ben Summerskill of Stonewall picked up on it too and commented on it in his March 2011 “ebulletin” for Stonewall.

Imagine my surprise today then when I went to try to find the original tweet on Amy’s feed, only to find she had deleted it!

Did I ruffle some feathers? Did she read my blog post and realise what a silly idea it really was? Or was she just embarrassed by being associated with such an ill-conceived proposal in the first place? I can’t answer for her of course – but in case you missed it, CLICK HERE for the original tweet as published on her feed.  Isn’t web caching wonderful?

I’ve also published a screen shot of it (below) in case the cached link stops working too.

UPDATE: 16:00 on  6/3/11 – I now find that Amy has BLOCKED me from following her on Twitter.  Come on, Amy – can you not deal with a bit of dissent?  Don’t like criticism? Why can you not engage in a reasoned debate? Blocking people doesn’t shut them up, nor does it make the issue go away…

I’m not a lesbian or a jedi, I’m an atheist!

4 03 2011

Census time is almost upon us again.  It does seem that every ten years, someone pops up with what they think is a wonderfully subversive idea to put something in the box that asks “religion”. In the past we’ve had “Jedi”, and this time around there is a move (encouraged by the likes of Amy Lame and Ben Summerskill of Stonewall) to encourage gay and lesbian Brits to put “lesbian” for their religion. And of course there is the obligatory Facebook page for it as well (you can see it HERE) which Stonewall supports and promotes.

Quite frankly, people like Summerskill should know better – but of course this is the very same man who refused to support marriage equality for gay and lesbian people then inexplicably changed his mind and said the government was not moving fast enough when in fact moves towards full equality are already underway.

Is “mygayvote.co.uk” a Labour fix? In defence of the LibDems on LGBT issues.

8 04 2010

I’m always suspicious when someone claims to have “no political affiliations” (mine are very clear!) and wants the facts to speak for themselves. It usually means that they DO have political affiliations, and they DON’T use all the facts.

So I suspect this is the case with the website “www.mygayvote.co.uk”, a site that claims to show the main parties’ voting record on LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender) issues in parliament.

First off, I found it very odd that the website used a “.co.uk” domain and not a “org.uk” domain – the site is not a commercial one, but a political one, so .org.uk would at first glance appear more appropriate. Also, a .co.uk domain name is actually more expensive that the .org.uk.   But there is a very good reason why the person behind this website chose “.co.uk” over “.org.uk”.

Nominet UK, the body that oversees UK internet domain names, does NOT allow “domain privacy” on any domain ending in .org.uk. This means that you cannot hide your contact details if you choose a “.org.uk” domain. So, one has to ask, what has the person behind this website got to hide? Read the rest of this entry »

Sex shocker: I’m not truly gay – am I?

18 01 2010

An article in The Times today tells a story of a man who has decided to “stop being gay” because he wants to be a father. We all know that these days, being a father and being gay are not mutually exclusive, but hitherto openly gay man Patrcik Muirhead seems to have decided that he wants to try being a dad – and at the same time, be in a relationship with the mother of his child. Moreover, he wants to conceive the child “naturally”.

Fair enough – his choice, was my reaction. I have long held a desire to be a father, even going as far as the “test tube” route as Muirhead puts it (actually we used needle-less syringes but hey, we know what he means) with a lesbian friend of mine.  But not everyone sees it simply as one man’s personal choice, not least many gay men.

Iris Robinson: the bible says she’s 40 times worse than gays!

8 01 2010

It’s always good sport when homophobic, self-righteous politicians fall from grace, but the Robinson affair has been truly spectacular.

For my foreign readers, or those in the UK who have missed it, Iris Robinson caused outrage some time ago by saying on BBC radio that “homosexuality was an abomination”.  This week, to many abominable people’s delight, the sixty-year old was forced to admit that she has been in an adulterous relationship with a 19-year old toy boy.  She lent him £50,000 as well and this has caused even more problems for her and her husband, Peter Robinson, the Northern Irish First Minister.

Peter Tatchell has called her a hypocrite.  That’s an understatement: I ran a quick check of the number of times “adultery” was mentioned in the King James Bible.  It came up 40 times – you can see the results here.  Not only is it mentioned 40 times, but to make it worse in god’s eyes, “thou shalt not commit adultery” is one of the biggies – its part of the “Ten Commandments”!

How many times is homosexuality mentioned (man lying with man?)

Just the once.

I think, Iris, that makes you 40 times more wicked.

God must be VERY displeased!

Time to slay the WAGs

30 12 2009

The recent coming out of rugby player Gareth Thomas has been met with near-universal support from sportsmen and mere mortals alike. Praised for his “bravery” and “guts” for announcing his homosexuality in a particularly macho sport (even though Australian rugby player Ian Roberts beat him to it by almost fifteen years), Thomas deserves the praise he has garnered.  Is sport slowly changing? And if so, what is to become of the WAGs? Read the rest of this entry »
